Overview

On the evening of April 23, 2026, a violent EF-4 tornado with winds up to 175 mph struck Enid, Oklahoma, cutting a 10-mile path of destruction through the city's south side. The Gray Ridge neighborhood sustained the worst damage, with homes and buildings leveled. Approximately 50 homes were destroyed and dozens more damaged, while Vance Air Force Base suffered damage to lighting systems and taxiway infrastructure, forcing a temporary closure. At least 10 people were injured, though no fatalities were reported. Governor Kevin Stitt signed Executive Order 2026-17 on April 24, declaring a disaster emergency for Garfield and Kay counties. FEMA deployed personnel including an acting regional administrator to work with local officials on damage assessments, with the U.S. Small Business Administration joining for joint damage assessments beginning April 28. The American Red Cross opened an emergency shelter at the Enid Chisholm Trail Expo Center and provided food, water, relief supplies, and emotional support. The Salvation Army of Arkansas-Oklahoma deployed Rapid Response Units to the Gray Ridge area, distributing food and supplies to affected residents. The tornado was confirmed as an EF-4 by the National Weather Service — the strongest tornado recorded in the United States so far in 2026.
