Overview
Hurricane Beryl became the earliest Category 5 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin when it struck the Eastern Caribbean in late June 2024. The storm caused catastrophic damage across St. Vincent, Grenada, Jamaica, and other surrounding islands, with heavy destruction to homes, infrastructure, and agricultural land. Entire communities on smaller islands were flattened by the extreme winds. GEM and its partners deployed teams to the ground to distribute emergency supplies, while World Central Kitchen activated operations to provide meals to affected populations across multiple islands. The storm's unprecedented early-season intensity raised alarm about the accelerating impacts of climate change on Caribbean nations.
