Overview

On January 1, 2024, a major 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in Japan, shattering the New Year holiday. The earthquake was the deadliest in Japan since 2016, taking the lives of hundreds and injuring many more. The quake triggered tsunami warnings along the Sea of Japan coast and caused widespread destruction across the rural peninsula. Entire towns were leveled, with traditional wooden buildings collapsing under the intense shaking. Fires broke out in the historic city of Wajima, destroying blocks of buildings. The remote location of the peninsula complicated rescue and relief efforts, with damaged roads limiting access to the hardest-hit communities.
