
Overview
A major tornado outbreak struck the Central and Midwestern United States over the period of March 5-12, 2026. The outbreak produced 99 confirmed tornadoes across six states, including the first EF5 tornado in the United States since 2013. The EF5 struck eastern Indiana on March 10 with winds exceeding 200 mph and a 14.6-mile damage path. The Kankakee-Lake Village EF3 tornado traveled 35.6 miles, killing 3 and injuring 11, while an EF3 near Union City, Michigan killed 3 more. Overall, 12 people were killed and over 144 injured, with 10 tornadoes rated EF2 or higher across six states. Approximately 500 buildings were damaged in Kankakee County alone. The Red Cross opened shelters at multiple locations, World Central Kitchen deployed meal service teams, and Samaritan's Purse sent volunteer teams to Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana.
