Overview
On November 21, 2022, a powerful earthquake struck near the city of Cianjur on Java island, Indonesia. Despite its moderate 5.6 magnitude, the shallow depth of the quake caused devastating damage, destroying thousands of buildings and triggering heavy landslides across the mountainous terrain. Over 300 people were killed and thousands injured, with many trapped under collapsed structures. The earthquake damaged schools, hospitals, and critical infrastructure in one of Java's most densely populated regions. International organizations deployed to provide search and rescue support, emergency medical care, shelter, and food to the affected population.
