Overview
The Lahaina fires in August 2023 completely devastated the historic Lahaina community on Maui, displacing thousands of residents and taking the lives of over 100 people — making it the deadliest wildfire in the United States in over a century. Strong winds from a passing hurricane and extremely dry conditions spread the fire rapidly through the historic town, giving residents little time to evacuate. The fire destroyed over 2,200 structures, including irreplaceable historic buildings in one of Hawaii's most culturally significant communities. GEM deployed immediately to provide BStrong cash cards and emergency supplies, while World Central Kitchen served hundreds of thousands of meals to displaced families and first responders.
