Overview
On September 8, 2023, a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Morocco's High Atlas Mountains region, centered southwest of Marrakesh. The earthquake killed nearly 3,000 people and injured thousands more, with the worst damage occurring in remote mountain villages where traditional stone and mud-brick construction collapsed. Entire villages were reduced to rubble, and the mountainous terrain made access to affected communities extremely difficult. GEM's MENA and Europe teams deployed to Marrakesh and the surrounding Atlas Mountain communities, providing immediate humanitarian assistance. World Central Kitchen activated operations to serve meals to survivors and rescue workers in the remote affected areas.
