Severe spring flooding triggered by rapid snowmelt and heavy rainfall has devastated communities across several provinces in Afghanistan. The flooding, which began in late March 2026, has affected an estimated 80,000 people and caused significant damage to homes, agricultural land, and critical infrastructure.
A Compounding Crisis
Afghanistan's ongoing humanitarian challenges make this flood disaster particularly dire. Years of conflict, economic instability, and recurring natural disasters have left many communities with limited capacity to cope with additional shocks. The flooding has destroyed crops just as the spring planting season was beginning, raising concerns about food security in the months ahead.
Humanitarian Response
International relief organizations are working to provide immediate assistance:
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has expanded its operations in affected provinces, providing emergency medical care and clean water distribution to displaced communities.
UNICEF USA is supporting efforts to ensure children and families have access to safe drinking water, nutrition support, and emergency education services in displacement sites.
The American Red Cross is coordinating with the Afghan Red Crescent Society to distribute emergency relief supplies including blankets, hygiene kits, and shelter materials.
