Unusual Kona Low Weather Pattern Brings Severe Flooding to Hawaii

Relief Directory StaffMarch 15, 2026 at 12:00 PM

An unusually persistent Kona Low weather system has brought days of relentless rainfall to the Hawaiian Islands, causing widespread flash flooding, landslides, and damage to infrastructure across Maui, the Big Island, and Oahu.

Relentless Rainfall

Some areas have received over 20 inches of rain in just 72 hours, overwhelming drainage systems and causing rivers to exceed flood stage. Multiple highways have been closed due to landslides and flooding, isolating some communities.

Emergency Response

The American Red Cross has opened shelters on multiple islands and is providing emergency assistance to families displaced by the flooding and landslides.

World Central Kitchen has activated its Hawaii team to prepare and distribute meals to evacuated residents and first responders working to clear roads and restore access to isolated communities.

Vulnerable Communities

The flooding has particularly impacted communities still recovering from the 2023 Maui wildfires, adding to the burden on families and local governments already stretched by ongoing recovery efforts.
